Activity Theme: 2020.04.09【2025 Intensive Mandarin Program】Cultural Class - Seal carving
Activity Time: 2025.04.09
Activity Introduction:
On April 9th, 2025, the International Affairs Office of UT was honored to invite external expert instructor, Mr. Huang Mingxiu, to conduct a special cultural course on seal carving for the international students in the Chinese language class. Mr. Huang, with his rich expertise and superb craftsmanship, introduced the students to the techniques and artistic charm of seal carving. He went a step further by personally guiding each student, teaching them step-by-step how to use carving knives to etch their desired patterns or characters on jade. From the proper way to hold the carving knife to the meticulous process of carving characters, Mr. Huang's patient and detailed guidance enabled each student to gradually master the techniques and truly experience the cultural depth embedded in seal carving.
This event was not only a process of learning carving techniques, but also a cultural exchange and experience. Under the guidance of the instructor, the students not only learned the basic skills of seal carving, but also gained a deep understanding of the elegance of Chinese characters and the artistic value that seals represent. With every stroke and every carve, the students were able to feel the unique charm of seal carving, as well as the attention to detail and respect for art that brings our culture vividly to life in their hands.
At the end of the event, Mr. Huang stamped the students' self-carved seals on paper, which not only affirmed their efforts but also served as a memento of this precious experience. The students eagerly took photos with their hand-carved works, their faces glowing with a sense of accomplishment and pride. This seal carving experience greatly benefited each participant, deepening their understanding both in terms of technique and their appreciation of Chinese culture.
Reflecting on the entire event, we are grateful for Mr. Huang Mingxiu's heartfelt teaching. He not only imparted the techniques of seal carving but also helped us understand the infinite meaning and aesthetics behind each seal and every brushstroke. This was an unforgettable lesson and a wonderful cultural journey that left a profound and precious mark on each student.
