Activity Theme: 2025 University of Central Arkansas & College of Hendrix Mandarin Study Abroad in University of Taipei

Activity Time: 2025.05.19~06.14

Activity Introduction:

To promote international exchange and cultural understanding, the University of Taipei recently welcomed faculty and students from its U.S. sister institutions—University of Central Arkansas (UCA) and Hendrix College—for a one-month Mandarin Language and Culture Study Program. Led by Professor Wen-Chia Liu from Hendrix College, the visiting group engaged in a variety of activities that provided an in-depth exploration of Taiwan’s rich culture and vibrant local life.

In addition to formal Mandarin language classes, the program featured hands-on cultural workshops such as pottery making in Yingge, Chinese seal engraving, pineapple cake baking, and an introduction to Chinese chess. These experiences allowed students to immerse themselves in Taiwan’s traditional arts while applying their language skills in real-world contexts.

The group also visited several of Taipei’s iconic cultural and historical landmarks, including Dadaocheng, the Taipei Confucius Temple, the National Palace Museum, Lin Family Mansion and Garden, and the Presidential Office Building. A weekend trip to Yilan offered further exploration, with visits to Jiaoxi’s fish foot spa and the National Center for Traditional Arts.

No cultural experience would be complete without food, and the students had the opportunity to savor some of Taiwan’s most beloved local dishes. Highlights included Din Tai Fung’s famous soup dumplings, braised pork rice from Formosa Chang, and pearl milk tea from Chun Shui Tang. A night at the Shilin Night Market gave students a taste of Taiwan’s vibrant night market culture and street food.

Through this immersive program, participants gained not only improved Mandarin proficiency but also a deeper appreciation of Taiwan’s cultural heritage and social customs. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Professor Wen-Chia Liu for her leadership and support in making this exchange a success.

The University of Taipei warmly welcomes future visits from UCA and Hendrix College and looks forward to continued collaboration and meaningful academic and cultural exchanges in the years to come.
